Southwest Literary Center

"In New Mexico (the Archbishop) always awoke a young man... His first consciousness was a sense of the light drywind blowing through the windows, with the fragrance of hot sun and sagebrush and sweet clover; a wind that made one's body feel light and one's heart cry 'Today, today', like a child's."

Willa Cather
Death Comes for the Archbishop

An art center for centuries, Santa Fe has stimulated the imaginations of writers including Mary Austin, Willa Cather, D. H. Lawrence, and N. Scott Momaday. Framed by mountains and wide desert expanses, culturally rich and varied, Santa Fe brings together past and present in its arts, architecture, and institutions. The Southwest Literary Center honors and builds upon a unique city's resources to serve writers, readers, and literary audiences. (Check out our new resource page for all things Santa Fe and literary.)

The Southwest Literary Center's mission is to promote excellence in literature. Regarded as the most comprehensive literary organization in New Mexico and one of the major literary centers in the Southwest, the Center presents the Santa Fe Writers Conference, the Writers Reading Series, the New Mexico Discovery Awards and other programs. Central elements include workshops, private conferences, readings, lectures, and panel discussions featuring distinguished and new authors, publishers, editors, and other invited speakers. The Santa Fe Writers Conference is held at the Hotel St. Francis, located in historic downtown Santa Fe. Readings are offered at the Writers Room of the Southwest Literary Center. The Writers Room is a reading and writing room with a library, comfy chairs and wireless access. It's a place to write on your own or attend a reading or a class.

The Southwest Literary Center is a division of Recursos de Santa Fe, a private not-for-profit organization which presents nationally-recognized seminars & conferences in the arts, sciences, letters, & humanities. Funders include the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission and the 1% Lodgers Tax.
